B B: Back to Vietnam War - Cu Chi tunnels and War Remnants Museum, Saigon

Tornare indietro nella Storia spesso permette di comprendere meglio il presente, la cultura attuale di un popolo, o semplicemente aiuta a farsi un'idea più completa di ciò che è davvero accaduto, che non preveda esclusivamente una versione "occidentale", o comunque di parte.

Saigon, detta anche Ho Chi Minh City - anche se il popolo del Vietnam preferisce decisamente la prima denominazione - è sicuramente il luogo adatto dove venire a contatto col passato.

A pochi km dalla città, è possibile visitare Cu Chi, il noto sito di tunnel utilizzati dai Vietnamiti sia per fronteggiare i Francesi negli anni '40, sia contro gli Americani durante la guerra del Vietnam.

La visita permette di rendersi conto dell'estrema organizzazione ed efficacia di questa fittissima rete di tunnel, talmente estesi che arrivavano sino al confine con la Cambogia.

Si ha inoltre la possibilità di fare l'esperienza di percorrere un pezzo dei tunnel ...vi assicuro che, dato lo spazio ovviamente ridotto, si fa una fatica terribile (ho resistito circa 3 minuti), e loro, all'epoca, ci facevano dei chilometri ...

Sempre per saperne di più sulla guerra del Vietnam, in centro a Saigon si trova il War Remnants Museum, dove, oltre a reperti originali della guerra e a spiegazioni sulle strategie che vennero utilizzate, si trova esposta una numerosissima serie di fotografie con scopo di testimoniare e deunciare le atrocità subite dalla popolazione del Vietnam da parte dell'esercito americano durante il conflitto, definite in seguito veri e propri crimini di guerra.

Le foto sono veramente toccanti, molte decisamente forti, per non dire scioccanti. In particolare, vi è un'area del Museo che mi ha veramente colpita, dedicata a testimoniare i terribili danni provocati dalle bombe arancio su persone e bambini nati anche 20 anni dopo la fine del conflitto. Le foto sono talmente forti che non me la sono sentita di inserirle in questo post. Bastano a far riflettere, a far conoscere le atrocità causate da questa guerra, da ambo le parti.

Ancora una volta, vedere coi propri occhi, toccare con mano i luoghi in cui la Storia si è svolta rende consci della propria ignoranza, di come vi sia sempre un'altra verità oltre a quella da noi conosciuta.

Looking backwards in the History allows to better understand the current culture of the local people in every country, as it helps to better know what really happened in the past and to hear a different version than the one they have been always taught us.

Saigon, known as Ho Chi Minh City as well - although Vietnamese definitely prefer to use the first name - is perfect for that purpose.

Just few km from the city centre, you can visit Cu Chi, famous for the huge tunnels system used by Vietnamese people against France in the 40's and against USA during the Vietnam War. Visiting Cu Chi will show you the great efficacy and organisation of these tunnels, which were long up to Cambodia border.

You will also have the chance to walk through a short section inside the tunnels ... I tried it and I can ensure that it's very hard (I lasted 3 minutes only). Just think about that they used to walk so many miles inside there !

If you wish to know more about Vietnam War, then you should go to the War Remnants Museum, in Saigon city centre, where, besides original war weaponries and objects, you will find a huge collection of pictures about the war's horror, testimoning the atrocities made from the American soldiers to Vietnamese civilians during the war, afterwards defined "war crimes".

These pictures are really touching and some of them are very strong, shocking even. There's one area, inside the museum, which struck me most. It's dedicated to the terrible damamges made by the "orange bombs" on Vietnamese people and children, still 20 years after the end of the war. These pictures are so strong that I really couldn't put them here on this post. An exhibition which wants to teach how bad that war was, for both the sides.

Once again, going directly on the places were History really happened make your mind clear about the past and teach you how there's always another truth, besides the one which we know already.
