Un giorno a Belfast tra mercatini e il Titanic. Belfast in one day through Sunday's markets and Titanic

Domenica scorsa io e il mio ragazzo abbiamo deciso di concederci una giornatina a Belfast, la capitale dell'Irlanda del Nord. La giornata è stata a dir poco stupenda. Oltre ad essere stati molto fortunati col tempo - incredibile a dirsi ma c'è stato sole tutto il giorno, e in queste zone vi posso assicurare che si tratta quasi di un miracolo - abbiamo avuto occasione di scoprire una città davvero molto carina. Belfast presenta una superficie piuttosto estesa e un discreto numero di abitanti (se si conta anche l'area metropolitana ne conta circa 800.000), tuttavia i punti d'interesse sono quasi tutti concentrati intorno al centro cittadino, perciò si tratta di una città che si riesce a visitare abbastanza in una sola giornata e, tra l'altro, una volta arrivati in centro, ci si può tranquillamente spostare totalmente a piedi.

La nostra giornata è cominciata alle 8 del mattino, prendendo il bus dall'autostazione di Derry che, in due ore esatte, ci ha condotto all'autostazione di Belfast in Grand Victoria street, nel pieno centro della città.

Da qui, ci siamo poi diretti nel fulcro della città: il Municipio. Si tratta di un edificio davvero maestoso, risalente alla fine dell'800 e costruito in onore della cessione, da parte dell'allora regina Vittoria, di un nuovo statuto alla città.

Dopo la visita al municipio, ci siamo diretti al St. George Market, su Bridge Street. Il luogo al coperto, aperto tutte le mattine con un mercato diverso, dà il meglio di sé durante la Domenica. Con i suoi deliziosi profumi e vivaci colori, ma anche per la sua caratteristica struttura, mi ha tanto ricordato il famoso Covent Garden di Londra, dove, fino a meno di un anno fa, passavo la maggior parte delle domeniche.

In questo tipico mercatino si può trovare davvero di tutto. I più golosi (ovviamente io sono da includere in questa categoria) si faranno tentare dalle numerose bancarelle di decoratissimi cupcakes o cioccolatini, oppure travolgere dagli odori di paella, cucina indiana, libanese o messicana, crêpes francesi o salsicce alla griglia accompagnate dalle tipiche uova strapazzate. Insomma ... cedere alle numerose tentazioni che il mercato propone non è difficile. Ma al St. George Market anche gli amanti del vintage troveranno pane per i loro denti. Cappelli da gentleman, da pastore irlandese o da lady inglese, dischi in vinile, oggetti da collezione, e tutto ciò che un mercatino delle pulci ha da offrire. Le idee regalo qui, non mancano di certo.

Oppure potrete semplicemente sbirciare i banchi con prodotti tipici del luogo, dai formaggi e i salumi al banco del pesce e delle verdure. Se capitate a Belfast una sosta qui non può certo mancare.

Dopo questa piacevolissima visita, ci siamo diretti dove qualunque amante dello shopping andrebbe: Victoria Square. Si tratta di una delle piazze principali della città. Sorge lungo la graziosissima Victoria Street, dove, poco più avanti, potrete scorgere l' Albert Memorial Clock, costruito nella seconda metà dell'800 in onore del re Albert e che oggi si presenta leggermente inclinata a causa di un cedimento del terreno (una torre di Pisa la vendetta insomma). La piazza presenta la più grande concentrazione di negozi e ristoranti di Belfast. E' coperta da una struttura moderna molto particolare che termina al quarto piano con una cupola panoramica. Qui, è possibile godere di una vista della città a 360° davvero mozzafiato. Noi abbiamo approfittato della grande offerta di ristoranti per farvi la pausa pranzo presso Cosmo. Si tratta di uno di quei ristoranti a buffet dove si paga un prezzo fisso piuttosto ridotto (noi abbiamo speso £12,50, ma tra settimana costa molto meno) che sono molto diffusi qui negli UK e ... è veramente una BOMBA ! Il buffet è semplicemente immenso e propone sette cucine diverse: Cinese, Thailandese, Giapponese, Indiana, Malesiana, Italiana e Messicana. Mai visto ( e mangiato ) niente di simile. Dopo una sosta pranzo qui, sarete sicuramente soddisfatti e ... pieni almeno fino al mattino seguente!

Al pomeriggio, è arrivato finalmente il momento che aspettavo di più, la visita al museo del Titanic. La famosissima nave, infatti, fu costruita e partì proprio dal porto della città nordirlandese più di 100 anni fa. All'epoca si trattava del transatlantico per passeggeri più grande al mondo. La nota tragedia che la investì nel 1912, durante il viaggio inaugurale, contribuì poi a renderla la nave più famosa mai esistita. La città di Belfast dedica al Titanic e al sito della sua costruzione non solo un modernissimo museo - e anche nuovissimo visto che fu aperto in occasione del centenario dall'accaduto, nel 2012 -, ma addirittura un intero quartiere.

Titanic museum

Il museo propone un viaggio di circa due ore, partendo dal contesto storico-culturale della città di Belfast dei primi anni del '900, per raccontare nel dettaglio la costruzione del transatlantico attraverso foto, filmati e percorsi straordinari, fino ad arrivare al lancio della nave nel 1911. Ovviamente non manca la descrizione del famoso impatto con l'Iceberg, durante il primo viaggio del Titanic. Il museo racconta le ultime ore di contatto del personale di bordo con altre navi, per cercare di ottenere un immediato soccorso, così come riesce, attraverso dirette testimonianze, a dare spazio alla voce dei passeggeri, sopravvissuti e non. La nostra visita a Belfast termina col Titanic. Ovviamente, come in ogni città, le cose da vedere sono troppe per un giorno solo e abbiamo dovuto tralasciare alcuni luoghi ... tuttavia abbiamo davvero passato una giornata indimenticabile e davvero interessante. Last Sunday, my boyfriend and I went to Belfast , the capital of Northern Ireland. Such an amazing trip! And we have been so lucky with the weather ! It was sunny for the whole day and, in these areas, I can assure that this is almost a miracle ! We really had the opportunity to discover a beautiful city. Belfast has got a large surface area and a lot of inhabitants ( if you count the metropolitan area too, the population is about 800,000 ), but the interesting places are almost all concentrated around the city center, so it's a city which you can easily visit in one day only and, once you have reached the center, you can go from one point to another just walking, you don't need any buses or taxi.

Our trip began at 8 am, taking the bus from Derry that, in two hours, took us to Belfast, to the bus station in Grand Victoria Street, in the city centre.
From here, we then headed into the heart of the city: the City Hall. It is a magnificent building, built in 1888.

After visiting the City Hall, we headed to the St. George's Market, in Bridge Street. It's an indoor venue, which every morning host a different market, but it surely gives its best on Sunday morning. With its delicious smells and vibrant colors, but also for its characteristic structure, it reminded to me the famous Covent Garden in London, where , until less than one year ago, I used to spend almost every Sunday morning.
In this typical market you can find almost everything. Greedy people ( obviously I am one of them ) will be crazy for the lovely stands of highly-decorated cupcakes or chocolates, or for the smells coming from the paella, the Indian cousine or the Lebanese and Mexican ones, from the French crêpes or the grilled sausages with scrambled eggs. This market offers so many temptations! At St. George's Market also vintage lovers will have fun. Gentleman's hats or Irish Shepherds' ones , vinyl records, collectibles, and everything that a Flea Market can offer. This market is just percect for any gift ideas.
Or maybe you can simply have a look at the stands with local products, cheeses and cold cuts, or the stands about fish and vegetables. If you are in Belfast, you cannot miss a stop here.

After this lovely visit, we headed where any shopalcoholic would go: Victoria Square. This is one of the main squares of the city. It is on Victoria Street, where, a little further, you will be able to see the Albert Memorial Clock, built in the second half of the 1800 in honor of King Albert, today it is slightly tilted due to the land subsidence ( a sort of tower of Pisa ). The square has the largest concentration of shops and restaurants in Belfast. It' s covered by a modern and panoramic dome at the fourth floor with a panoramic dome. Here, you can enjoy a 360 ° view of the city which it really breathtaking. We took advantage of the great offer of restaurants to make our lunch break at Cosmo. This is a buffet restaurants where you pay a quite cheap fixed price ( we spent £ 12.50, but during the week it costs much less ) and ... it is really AMAZING ! The buffet is just huge and it offers seven different cuisines: Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Indian , Malaysian , Italian and Mexican. Never seen ( and eaten ) anything like this. After a lunch stop here, you'll surely be satisfied and ... full at least until the next morning !

In the afternoon, it finally came the time to visit what I was wating most: the museum of Titanic. The famous ship, in fact, was built in the city's harbour more than 100 years ago. At that time it was the largest passenger liner ship in the world. Then, the well-known tragedy happened in 1912, during Titanic maiden voyage, made it the most famous ship ever existed. The city of Belfast dedicated to Titanic and to the site of its construction not only a museum - opened in the occasion of the centenary of the tragedy, in 2012 - but an entire quarter as well.

The museum offers, in about two hours, the story of the historical and cultural context of the city of Belfast in the early years of the 1900, in order to tell in detail the construction of Titanic through photos and movies, up to the launch of the ship in 1911. Of course, it doesn't miss the description of the famous impact with the Iceberg, during the first voyage of the Titanic. The museum chronicles the final hours of the contact between the staff of board and the other ships, which tried to get an immediate relief. The museum is also able, through direct testimonies, to give space to the voice of the passenger, survived or not. A really exciting journey through the which is really worthy of attention. Our visit in Belfast ends here. Of course, as in any other city, the interesting things to see are too many for one day only and we had to leave out some places ...
